BBC presses UK foreign secretary on timing of recognising Palestinian state

Date:

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Tuesday that his country will recognise a Palestinian state at a United Nations meeting in September, unless Israel meets certain conditions.

Sir Keir said the plan would go ahead unless the Israeli government takes “substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza”, including a ceasefire and a commitment to a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.

About 140 countries formally recognise a Palestinian state, and last week France pledged to do so at the same UN meeting.

The BBC’s Tom Bateman pressed UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on the timing of the Palestinian state recognition, after a UN-backed food security body said the “worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out” in Gaza.
