After residents in Kastamonu’s Hisarardı neighborhood in Turkey complained of a bad smell, authorities uncovered a 30-meter-long tunnel inside a house, believed to have been dug illegally for treasure hunting. Residents on İbn-i Neccar Street reported the foul odor, which had been present for about four days, to the neighborhood muhtar, who then notified the authorities. Police were dispatched to the suspected source of the smell.
Upon arriving at the location, police attempted to reach the homeowner, identified as T.D. Police discovered an approximately 30-meter-long tunnel inside the house, dug to a depth of about two meters and believed to have been excavated for treasure hunting.

Following this discovery, fire brigade and crime scene investigation teams were called to the location, according to Milliyet. Despite thorough examinations, the exact source of the bad smell that led to the initial complaint could not be determined.
The homeowner, T.D., was taken into custody for questioning regarding the unauthorized excavation and the tunnel’s construction.
Local resident Necdet Gül expressed concerns about the situation. “While sitting in the open area of the tea house in the garden, a bad smell has surrounded us for three to four days,” said Gül, according to Yeni Akit. “We got suspicious from this smell.”
